Screen_Shot_2015-06-20_at_8.00.54_AM

Happy Father’s Day weekend!  To celebrate dudes everywhere (dads included!), we asked some of our male FHITpros questions about guys in group exercise, the common misconceptions, and why dudes should start HITting it at The Fhitting Room. Share this post with special dudes in your life and help enlighten them about living FHIT.

ERIC SALVADOR

What is it about exercising in a group setting (i.e. The Fhitting Room) that you can’t get elsewhere?
Instructors that will not only motivate you through the workout but will ensure you're doing the exercises correctly.  Every class consists of a variety of different exercises and functional movements.  When paired with great music and knowledgeable instructors, it makes for a fun full body workout.

What do you think more guys should know about The Fhitting Room?
More guys should know this isn't your girlfriend’s aerobic step class. All the movements are functional, meaning they are compound exercises that use every muscle in the body. It's a high intensity workout that will have you out of breath with short recoveries. For example, we use battle ropes, kettlebells, rowers, ski erg, medicine balls, plyo boxes, dumbbells and the suspension trainer (the jungle gym) for our body weight exercises.

What’s your favorite exercise move we do at TFR and why?
Anything with the kettlebell.  They are small and compact but you can do so many exercises with them. For example KB thrusters, KB snatches, swings, and clean and presses to name a few.

What do you think are the biggest beneFHITs of a TFR workout for men?
Our classes will definitely improve their cardio and stamina, making them stronger in the process. By integrating all muscles in our workout and not isolating certain areas of the body, we burn more calories and ensure a very efficient way of training.

What do you love about teaching a class that includes both men and women?
I love training classes that include men and women because FHIXers who are couples or friends can sweat together.  It also proves that strength and conditioning doesn’t differ amongst gender. Bottom line is our classes are for everyone, male, female, young, or old!

What do you believe is the biggest misconception among men about group fitness?
Men easily assume that they are going to feel like they are going to get an ineffective workout that doesn’t accomplish their fitness goals.  Because our class involves plyometric training, strength, agility, speed, and power you are able to get a highly effective workout that covers all of your bases.

What do you love most about the Fhitting Room community?
Our FHIXers are a close-knit group of people that continues to grow due to the strong relationships we develop with them from the minute they walk in and check in at the front desk. I take pride in the real relationships I have with our FHIXers in and outside our studios because its that relationship that instills trust in them as I push them to get stronger, faster and just feel good about themselves.

CARLOS DAVILA

What is it about exercising in a group setting (i.e. The Fhitting Room) that you can’t get elsewhere?
There is an energy that you just can't get from one on one training. There is also at times an unspoken competitive nature in a Fhitting Room class. For example, you are more likely to do an extra burpee, pull on that rower a little harder, or jump on a box a little higher within a group setting.

What do you think more guys should know about The Fhitting Room?
These workouts are serious! I know that many of the classes have a lot of females, but they HIT it hard!  The great thing about these classes is that in a lot of ways you dictate the level. You pick the weight, box height, etc. allowing you to push yourself.  Also there is always a strength component.

What’s your favorite exercise move we do at TFR and why?
Burpee. Because everyone hates it and it is honestly more of a mentally challenging movement than physical at times. I also like man-makers because they are essentially slower burpees with weights.

What do you think are the biggest beneFHITs of a TFR workout for men?
Strength, endurance, coordination, core strength, toning...  I mean what else do you want guys?!

What do you love about teaching a class that includes both men and women?
I like the fact that it allows for camaraderie and a bit of a push when you are working with the opposite sex.  Whether we want to admit it or not, if the lady next to you is lifting more than you, or going faster, you will push yourself harder.  The same applies to the ladies, if your male friend is killing it on the air squats that will push you to pick up your pace.

What do you believe is the biggest misconception among men about group fitness?
That they are not intense enough, that it’s mostly for women, and that there isn't as much motivation. All things that we make sure are not the case at The Fhitting Room.

What do you love most about the Fhitting Room community?
The energy! I love the enthusiasm, commitment to FHITness, and fellowship that our FHIXers have. It’s as if you are working out with a bunch of your friends even if you are in class for the very first time.  I love taking class too, it’s a great workout and it’s always fun to HIT it with our FHIXers.

SIMON LAWSON

What is it about exercising in a group setting (i.e. The Fhitting Room) that you can’t get elsewhere?
The level of attention that you receive from our instructors is unprecedented.  Detail to attention makes a huge difference in results.  Lots of guys have been doing exercises incorrectly for a long time because they learned their technique from a buddy or a magazine or just by watching the guy with the nice physique in the gym. At TFR, you'll learn the right way to get the best results out of every movement.

What do you think more guys should know about The Fhitting Room?
We lift weights here bro!!! In the form of dumbbells, kettle bells, and your own body weight.  When many guys think of group exercise they automatically think of cardio.  Sure you'll get a good cardio-pulmonary workout in our classes but you'll put on some good muscle mass too if you challenge yourself. Pick up that orange kettlebell!

What’s your favorite exercise move we do at TFR and why?
My favorite move at TFR is the man-maker.  It uses dumbbells and works every major muscle group. Quads, Glutes, Delts, Pecs, Core. It's tough as hell, as the slightly sexist name indicates. I consider it the weighted-cousin of a burpee.

DAURY DROSS

What is it about exercising in a group setting (i.e. The Fhitting Room) that you can’t get elsewhere?
As far as working out by myself, I’ve always had solid self-motivation because when I was young I was overweight. I always push myself to become stronger and better.  When I work out at TFR, I love that there is group motivation.  Even when I take class, fellow FHIXers will keep pushing me because I do that for them when they take my class.

What do you think more guys should know about The Fhitting Room?
A lot of guys lack strength, conditioning, and mobility.  When you take a TFR class, we cover all those things.  During the warm up we do exercises that prepare you for the moves that will be included later in the workout.

What’s your favorite exercise move we do at TFR and why?
I love the burpee because it is my biggest challenge.  Every time we do them in class, I try to beat my previous record.  Aside from that, it is a total body exercise that gets your heart rate up and covers multiple muscle groups- arms, legs, and core.

What do you think are the biggest beneFHITs of a TFR workout for men?
During class you can always challenge yourself to lift heavy, while at the same time work on your conditioning because you want to get through the entire class.

What do you love about teaching a class that includes both men and women?
I love to see a collaboration of both genders coming together during a 50-minute class and pushing themselves to their max effort.

What do you believe is the biggest misconception among men about group fitness?
I think there is a fear of the unknown and not being in full control of your workout.  There is also an element of being afraid they will not perform at their best because they are not conditioned.  A lot of guys underestimate what a class can do for them.

What do you love most about The Fhitting Room community?
I love the dedication, the loyalty, and their consistency to be stronger, leaner, and more FHIT.  At the same time, our FHIXers are my inspiration.

JAVA MARTINEZ

What’s your favorite exercise move we to do at TFR and why?
Hands down the dumbbell snatch. The snatch is a full body movement that requires you to pick up a heavy dumbbell, from the ground to an overhead position in one swift movement. It works your legs, core, and arms making it the perfect mix of strength and technique.

What do you think are the biggest beneFHITs of a TFR workout for men?
Not only do you get the benefits of working out in a state of the art facility but you also have some of the best coaches to push you to your potential. This class is a fun and motivational environment, and you are surrounded by people with similar interests and goals.

What do you believe is the biggest misconception among men about group fitness?
I really don't know, because if they knew what I do about our classes, they would be in there all day.

BEN WEGMAN

What is it about exercising in a group setting (i.e. The Fhitting Room) that you can’t get elsewhere?
The camaraderie you experience at The Fhitting Room is unlike any other workout.  Because you are often working in teams, you are always working harder, pushing each other, and working to be your best.  This happens rarely when working out alone or in other group fitness classes.

What do you think more guys should know about The Fhitting Room?
The Fhitting Room is tough, that’s what guys should know.  Don’t be fooled by the lime green and pretty towels; this workout will kick your ass and then some.

What’s your favorite exercise move we do at TFR and why?
I love burpees.  LOVE LOVE LOVE them.  They are super efficient and target everything in your body; and also they’re just a lot of fun.

What do you think are the biggest beneFHITs of a TFR workout for men?
Our workouts challenge you to work more efficiently and effectively.  So many men go to the gym and do static, inefficient workouts every day.  TFR pushes guys to be more functional in their workouts while also being more proficient.

What do you love about teaching a class that includes both men and women?
I love watching the rivalries that occur in class - husband against wife, boyfriend against girlfriend, and office mates both male and female compete.  TFR workouts are effective for everyone so there are no barriers in regards to gender in our workouts.

What do you believe is the biggest misconception among men about group fitness?
I think the biggest misconception about group fitness is that you won’t get a good workout.  I think our classes are proving that misconception wrong every day and more and more guys are showing up to do the work.

What do you love most about The Fhitting Room community?
The best thing about The Fhitting Room is the intimate relationships that are formed between clients and instructors.  Because class involves so much one on one instruction and coaching, you really get to know people who come to class.  The Fhitting Room becomes a home for many people and a family.

FAROUK HOUSSEIN

What is it about exercising in a group setting (i.e. The Fhitting Room) that you can’t get elsewhere?
Exercising in a group setting adds a whole different dynamic. You have others alongside you who are after similar goals and giving the same workout their all. Having people around you adds accountability by adding in that friendly competition. All in all, I guarantee you will work a lot harder than you would if you were in a room on your own. The Fhitting Room specifically has two instructors per 24 person class which allows for more individual attention to help improve form and technique and prevent injuries!

What do you think more guys should know about The Fhitting Room?
I think guys should know that the Fhitting room is for both men and woman regardless of fitness level or skill set. If you come in willing to work hard and give your all, you are going to get your butt kicked. You are going to get what you put out!

What’s your favorite exercise move we do at TFR and why?
My favorite move that we do at The Fhitting room is the kettlebell thruster. The movement engages your whole body, and no matter what weight or what rep scheme, they are always brutal!

What do you think are the biggest beneFHITs of a TFR workout for men?
Biggest benefits of The Fhitting Room workout is it’s 50 minutes of high intensity training. Time is of the essence in any New Yorker's life so getting your butt kicked in a total body workout in 50 minutes is great. Even when you finish the class, your body is still burning fat due to high intensity training’s after burn effect. If you ask me, that's a lot of bang for the buck!

What do you love about teaching a class that includes both men and women?
The common bond they share during the workout. I think men will be surprised at how hard the women work and in turn will push themselves harder, and women will be surprised that they can work just as hard if not harder than the men. Regardless of the competition factor, that camaraderie is built and respect is given because everyone is giving their all!

What do you believe is the biggest misconception among men about group fitness?
I think the biggest misconception is that every class will be like an 80's aerobics class! No offense to those who enjoy that, but there are incredible workouts out there that will help you get the results you want faster than sitting on a machine!
