Fueling FHIT Series: Movement is Medicine
Wellness • June 27, 2025
Some people might ask why a dietitian is always posting her workouts and fitness videos on her social media. Part of it is that it chronicles my story and documents change and progress. Another reason is that it is a way to show that I practice what I preach – that consistency is key and results happen over time – with both fitness and nutrition. I will never tire of teaching that repeated practices become healthy habits which lead to sustainable results.
As a practitioner it is my job to help people, but it is also important to identify with the same people that come to me for support. It is my birthday this week and this next year is already starting off with new and exciting ventures, including contributing to this weekly blog. As with any change, there comes challenge, resistance, and many other emotions that often impact diet, exercise, and mental health. I try to encourage people to control the controllables. For me, this has been my workout routine. Some days it served as a good escape, some “me time” and a chance to clear my head for one hour. But most days it was about keeping with routine, staying consistent, and working toward results. I spend a lot of my time helping people to make better food choices but wellness extends beyond the plate. I know this because weight loss patients often ask how to get a flatter stomach. While it is true that “abs are made in the kitchen”, that is only half the equation. Exercise is necessary to develop and strengthen muscles, but a diet that supports fat loss will reveal the muscles and your hard work.
So, what else do you gain from routine exercise?
- Reduced cortisol levels equals less stress and anxiety. Calming the nervous system is something everyone needs.
- Moderate to high impact exercise releases endorphins, which can help reduce stress and improve mood. This might also include restored confidence in the way you look and feel.
- Signing up for a class is like making a date with yourself, and nobody likes to be stood up. This type of commitment provides structure. Allow for some flexibility but align your fitness routine with your goals.
- Exerting energy during the day leads to better sleep at night. Exercise helps you fall asleep faster and improves the quality of your sleep. Try to avoid exercise within 2 hours of sleep, since the release of endorphins will make it harder to wind down.
- Group fitness provides a sense of community. There is a common interest and often some accountability. Both make it easier to “stick with it.” Some of my very close friends are fellow FHIXers that provide support in and out of the gym.
I was one of the founding members when Fhitting Room opened its doors on the Upper East Side over 12 years ago and it was there that my love for kettlebells began. After many years of different activities, schedule changes, and navigating life, I have found a routine that is truly the perfect FHIT for my life.
