Shirel Guez was 24 years old, 350lbs and unhappy when she decided it was time to change her life. Shirel began her weight loss journey by altering her diet and attending cardio-based fitness classes. After a lot of success, she still found herself seeking more dynamic and functional workouts to keep up momentum. In May 2015, Shirel experienced her first FHIX and hasn’t turned back since. Since incorporating our signature FHIX workouts into her regime she has lost an additional 60 pounds and counting. Here’s how Shirel found a new love for the FHITlife.
1.When did you begin working out at Fhitting Room?
I started coming to The Fhitting Room in May 2015. I remember my first class and haven't looked back ever since. It's become an amazing part of my routine, and my FHITfam has been - and continues to be - a driving force in my personal journey towards a healthy lifestyle. When I started going to The Fhitting Room, I had already lost approximately 90 pounds in the previous 8 months, but I had hit a plateau. The workout style and awesome instructors at TFR helped me ramp up my fitness routine and greatly supplemented the heavy amount of cardio I was doing at Flywheel. Since starting to train at The Fhitting Room, I have lost an additional 60+ pounds for a total of over 150 pounds, and I truly couldn't have done it without Ben, Amanda, Daury, Simon, Dara and every single member of the Fhitting Room team.
2. How did you hear about Fhitting Room?
Two of my favorite Flywheel instructors and friends, Kara Bocchi and Wendy Wolfson, told me about it. They believed it would be a great way for me to balance out the cardio I was doing at Flywheel and also help me build lean muscle. One Saturday, they introduced me to Ben who encouraged me to come and get my first FHIX at the Fhitting Room. I took my first class a week later and even though Ben wasn't the instructor, he was there to greet me, introduce me to the instructors and make sure I felt comfortable. Ben has become one of my greatest supporters and an inspiration to me. He has a way of knowing how far he can push me and is always there to improve my form and performance. I am so grateful to have had that chance encounter with him.
3. Why do you enjoy getting your FHIX?
I think the simplest answer is that strength is empowering. A year ago I didn't think I would make it to age 30, and today I can't wait to wake up every morning and hit the ground running. It's this incredible sense of confidence and happiness that you get from being able to do something you never thought you could have done. Most of all, I have had the pleasure of training with some of the greatest Fhitting Room instructors who push me to my limits and still keep me smiling and laughing along the way.
4. What has been one of your best “aha!” moments at Fhitting Room?
I think my favorite moment was about 5 months ago. I was taking Daury's class at Flatiron and we had a 2-minute row for distance. I still remember Daury kneeling beside me cueing my breathing and throwing a few words of encouragement my way. Just like that, 2 minutes blew by, and I crushed a 1:42 split. I couldn't believe it because during my first class a few months prior I was barely breaking a 2:30 split. That's when I realized not only did I love the rower, but after months of training at The Fhitting Room, I had gained an incredible amount of strength. Seeing improvement, feeling accomplished and achieving personal goals is what drives me. Most of all, it reminds me how blessed I am to have a healthy body and to have finally found my strength, both physically and emotionally.
5. Any advice that you would tell future FHIXers?
Don't make excuses. I spent so much of my life making excuses for why I couldn't do something. My biggest piece of advice to anyone thinking of trying out The Fhitting Room is don't make excuses for not going. Try it, be scared, be uncomfortable. If it doesn't scare you, it won't change you.
6. You have accomplished so much, what keeps you going?
I think having so many great people supporting me and inspiring me every day. Not just the amazing instructors at The Fhitting Room, but the FHIXers who will sweat beside you and pat you on the back at the end of class. Recently, I got a tattoo to commemorate losing 150 pounds. The tattoo is the number 350, which was my starting weight and underneath it says, have a strong heart in Hebrew. Sometimes when it gets tough it's nice to look at it because I am reminded of how far I've come and also how much more of an incredible journey I have in front of me. Most of all, having my health, my strength, my life, it's so much to be grateful for and also a constant reminder never to take anything for granted and always give 150% to everything I do.
7. How would you describe your 'FHIXperience' to a friend?
I would describe it as an incredibly important part of my journey. I have made great friends, found my strength and achieved things I never thought I could. But the greatest thing about The Fhitting Room is that every time you go, you will leave sweaty, happy, and accomplished.
