Trick or Treat: 7 Healthy Halloween Candy Alternatives

Halloween can often result in some pretty freaky fitness faux-pas when it comes to overindulging in sweet treats. However, just like any holiday, Halloween is one day of the year, and as long as you enjoy in moderation, you deserve a candy fix every so often. When it comes to unfit foods, extra-sugary candy is definitely a top contender but not all candy is considered equal.

Here’s a breakdown of the most unfit choices with some alternative healthier options to help you get your sugar fix without needing to double up on your Fhitting Room FHIXes to burn it all off.

unFHIT choice: Snickers
Caramel is extra bad for teeth! When combined with chocolate and nougat, the amount of sugar and carbs result in a lot of unnecessary calories.

These chocolate bars use crunchy pretzel instead of the nougat.

unFHIT choice: Reese’s Peanut Butter Pumpkins
As cute at they may be, these special Halloween-themed Reese’s contain up to 100 EXTRA calories plus way more saturated fat than the standard cup. (This applies to most candies that are produced especially for any holiday season!)

unFHIT choice: Candy Corn
The only similarity between this Halloween staple and actual corn, is in the name (and perhaps the outward appearance of yellow). Candy corn is especially unFHIT because with no protein or healthy fats, it’s just sugar, artificial coloring and flavoring, and more sugar.
FHITter choice: Sunflower Seed SunDrops
SunDrops provide festive Halloween-colored treats but these yellows, oranges, and reds contain no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

unFHIT choice: Tootsie Pops
Lollipops can actually prove to be a smart treat, as one lollipop takes longer to consume than too many handfuls of M&Ms. However, Tootsie Pops and other sugary pops allow sugar to linger on the teeth long enough to create some major decay.

There’s no denying the fact that we all need some sugar to function properly and have enough energy to maintain our FHITness. However, Fun Dip should never be the source; and we can assure you, burning off a Fun Dip splurge is anything but fun.
FHITter choice: Smarties
They’re still just sugar, but they’re easier to consume responsibly with controlled portion size.  Smarties contain half the calories of what Fun Dip packs into a serving.

unFHIT choice: Skittles
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that these rainbow colored chewy treats are made with sugar, corn syrup, hydrogenated palm oil (trans fat), and artificial colors. There’s nothing natural about this rainbow of artificially flavored fruit chews.
FHITter choice: Peanut M&Ms
They’re also colorful but won’t produce the same sugar spike as Skittles because of their relatively low glycemic index. They’ll keep your sugar craving in check for a longer period so you won’t be as likely to keep reaching for more.

unFHIT choice: Sugary Bubble Gum
They’ve been making this stuff the same way for 50 years; and in this case, upholding tradition means the creators care just as much about nutritional value as they did 50 years ago.
FHITter choice: Sugar-free gum
It can help keep your mouth busy with something other than Halloween treats. Plus, it can dislodge some of the sugary remnants clinging to your teeth.

Halloween is generally associated with those sweet treats we all enjoy at this time of the year, but an additional trick to ensure that your family isn’t over-celebrating should happen before the trick-or-treating begins. Make sure you and your kids fuel up with a healthy, fulfilling dinner to prevent snacking along the way. A dinner loaded with veggies, whole grains and lean protein (such as chicken) should do the trick. When you get home, encourage them to donate a portion of their collection to one of the several causes around the city. The remaining candy should be enjoyed as a pair, with one healthy option to accompany the treat. They should have a piece of fruit, a glass of milk, peanut butter crackers, or a similar healthy snack to fill them up a bit before digging into the candy. As a rule of thumb, tossing out the most brightly colored candy can help you avoid some of those excessively processed treats with countless artificial ingredients.

Ultimately, if you live FHIT for most of the year, and you exchange a FHIX with a Snickers bar, you deserve to get your sugar FHIX on certain occasions. The reason our FHIXers are drenched in sweat when they leave, is because they’re working hard and hard work deserves to be rewarded. So this Halloween, treat yourself in moderation and definitely keep these FHIT tricks in mind!
