Celebrating International Women's Day!

Happy International Women’s Day! This very special day is celebrated annually on March 8th to recognize the achievements of women globally and raise awareness for equal rights. Being a female-owned and led company, made up of so many amazing women, we’re excited to join in on the festivities. Who is a woman who has inspired you?

My grandmother will forever be one of my favorite women to talk about. She was equal parts tiny and tough. She was less than 5’ tall, wore spiked heels well into her 70’s maybe 80’s, walked 6 miles a day until her early 90’s, had no college degree, yet did all the bookkeeping for a major insurance company (a job she started after my mom got married), had a stubborn streak that makes me look easy going, and she had enough strength, love and determination to fill the body of someone 100x her size. In my eyes, there was nothing she couldn’t do IF (and only IF) she wanted to.

When it comes to business, my last female manager at Pepsi, Lauren Hobart, was and is a huge inspiration. When I worked for Lauren, I was newly engaged.  She had three young children, a successful career and was exceptionally smart and talented. She was living proof that a woman could simultaneously love her job, pursue a career, and be all-in professionally while also loving her family and being a good mother. Watching Lauren juggle – notice I did not say balance – helped me years later when I started Fhitting Room while raising my two boys. PS – Lauren is now the President + CEO of DICK’S Sporting Goods. 🎉

Why does working on a team with so many women motivate you?

At Fhitting Room, there are incredible women in every position. I love leading a team of women who learn from, applaud, support, mentor, lead, and collaborate with each other. Women’s work relationships are often characterized as “complex” and described as catty or mean. I’m all for myth-busting. From our clients to our corporate team, Fhitting Room women are stronger together, and we know it! 👊 And, I love when we host birthday parties for a group of girls or private classes in the park for young teenage girls; the next generation of women is fierce!

We are only just starting to see the impact that the COVID-19 Pandemic has had on woman in the workforce, especially mothers, so I feel now even more than ever it’s important to be part of an organization that is led by a woman, mom and general badass, who over the past 8 years has filled our FHITbiz team with other strong female leaders.

Why does working on a team with so many women motivate you?

I’m consistently motivated by the “can do it” energy of our team. Women are known to be elite multi-takers and I think our FHITbiz team takes it to another level; whether it’s helping out another team member on a brainstorm, or going all hands on deck when opening a new studio, together this team is unstoppable.

Who is a woman who has inspired you?

My mom. She is an incredible woman that has been the rock of our family my entire life. She’s not just my mom, she’s my best friend, and I don’t know what I’d do without her. She always managed to balance raising us kids, having a full time job and still making time for important moments and memories. She works hard and loves harder!

Why is International Women’s Day important to you?

While there’s still more to do, the day gives us the ability and time to reflect on the progress we’ve made, as community leaders, as mothers, as wives and as entrepreneurs.

Who is a woman who has inspired you?

Definitely my mom. She truly does it all, and with patience, grace, kindness, and boundless love. Her entire career was dedicated to helping others, but I don't remember 1 moment where I didn't have her undivided attention when I needed or wanted it. She's a superwoman and my biggest role model.

Why does working on a team with so many women motivate you?

I learn so much from my colleagues everyday. Working with other strong women motivates me to reach higher, and it's comforting to know I have an amazing support system. We're each other’s cheerleaders! Not to mention sharing lots of laughs and caffeine runs. ☕

As a mother, I want to empower my daughter to accept herself and know that she is deserving of big hopes and aspirations like the women who have helped pave the way before her. We've come a long way but we have a long way to go on the journey toward equality. There is work but there is also hope - we can do it!

Why is it important to you to work at a female-founded company?

It's more than just being a female-founded company. Fhitting Room Founder, Kari is an incredible role model and embodies so much of what it means to be a BOSS - she is well studied and unapologetic in her endeavors but also incredibly open to learning and growing. She doesn't see boundaries and inspires all those she comes into contact with. She was a woman with an idea and rather than waiting for someone else to do it, she took the reins and made it happen...and continues to make it happen years later.

Why is it important to you to work at a female-founded company?

Kari Saitowitz is probably one of the most badass females I’ve ever met. With joining the team this past year, in a time where everyone has looked + leaned on their leaders, I couldn’t be more inspired + grateful to have Kari leading the way for all of us. She emulates what it means to truly be a leader in business + in life. Working for a female-founded company, especially for Kari, sets a prime example of what all women are capable of.

Why does working on a team with so many women motivate you?

Working on a team with so many women is my absolute favorite thing about working at Fhitting Room. I’ve never experienced so much support, motivation, camaraderie + unity in the workplace before. Literally every single person on this team brings something so unique to the table and I love learning from such a diverse + brilliant group of females. This team + all around hustle that they bring makes me want to do my best work and crush it every day!

Alex, Social Media + Content Manager

Who is a woman who has inspired you?

My mom is one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever met. She is so selfless in everything she does and one of the hardest working people I know. Since day 1 she always made sure to tell my sister and I that we could be whoever we want in this world. She raised 2 strong and confident daughters and continues to be a ray of light in the lives of everyone she meets. She’s not a regular mom, she’s a cool mom!

Why is it important to you to work at a female-founded company?

It’s so important for me to work for a female-founded company because it shows we are one step closer to achieving gender equality and I get to experience first hand the kind of badass female example and role model we want for the future generations. It’s inspiring to work for a female founder who is so dedicated, smart, involved, a great mother, and so much more all at the same time.

Why is it important to you to work at a female-founded company?

I take a lot of pride in working for a female-founded company. It means breaking through the glass ceiling is possible for women. Our gender is not a limitation. We are capable of achieving anything!

Why does working on a team with so many women motivate you?

It is inspiring and motivating to work with strong and intelligent women who aren't afraid to push boundaries.

Elspeth (El), Operations Manager

Around 15 years ago I worked for an NGO that had consultative ECOSOC status at the United Nations (abbreviations for brevity).  Our focus brought awareness to the unique harms endured by women during war and conflict and called for the inclusion of women in peacekeeping and reconstruction efforts.  Ellen Johnson Sirleaf had just been elected the first female head of state in Africa and the first all-female peacekeeping mission was deployed in Liberia.  Working with peacemakers worldwide, tirelessly committed to bringing security to their communities was incredible.  I could fill a page with names of women I am humbled to know.

Why is it important to you to work at a female-founded company?

I'm dispirited by how many people are consistently surprised that I work for a female-founded company.  Frequently the follow-up question goes something like, "Did you say FR is just owned by 1 woman?"  Working for a female-founded company will be important to me until that information is no longer surprising or so rare that it requires follow-up confirmation.

Who is a woman who has inspired you?

There are so many women in my life who inspire me; our biz team, for example. They bring their A game every day, 100% of the time. On a personal note, all the working mothers in my life are inspiring; being able to manage home, children, pets, and full time employment is incredible to me.

Why does working on a team with so many women motivate you?

Everyone has a voice and is given the opportunity to be heard.

Lolo, Senior Graphic Designer

A woman who inspires me is Sabine Marcelils, a Dutch designer who creates magical experiences. I love this quote by her, “For me, there is no giving up—if you want to do something, you keep doing it until you succeed.”

Why does working on a team with so many women motivate you?

Working with a female team and founder brings me a sense of understanding and comfort. I love working with people I can relate to and know the struggles of being a women (biologically and socially). We don't have to talk about it, but we all know and have a mutual respect for each other.

Another great way to celebrate is to support female-owned businesses. Here are some of  Team Fhitting Room’s favorite female-owned businesses (besides Fhitting Room of course):

"I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you." - Frida Khalo
