The SkiErg is a low-impact machine that works to build strength and endurance while burning calories. The SkiErg may look intimidating if you don't know how to use it, but with proper form and a little practice, it's easier than you may think. Amanda and Mat are here to show us how:
First, ensure your feet are securely planted hip-width apart. Reach up and grab the handles at the top of the machine. Keeping your spine long and your neck neutral, never craned upward, pull the handles hard past your pockets. Reverse the motion by fully extending your arms back overhead, and repeat the movement.
Here, Mat demonstrates improper form. When pulling the handles, make sure you're not pulling directly down as he does here. The handles should rest just behind your pockets, not down by your toes.
In order to fully extend at the top of the movement, make sure you're not squatting down at the bottom of the movement. Your back should be flat, not rounded, and your neck should stay in line with your spine.
Watch as Mat performs the move in real time. He reaches up to fully extend the handles overhead before pulling his hands down past his hips, hinging backward without going into a full squat. He keeps a long spine and neutral neck throughout the entire routine to prevent injury.
